Many of the local organic farms which supply FireWorks began operation over 30 years ago, as did neighboring First Alternative Coop, the area's largest organic and natural foods grocery.

Earthen Building

FireWorks' most stunning feature is our 9-foot tall wood fired earthen oven, designed and built by Kiko Denzer, author of Build Your Own Earthen Oven. The oven consists of a foot-thick clay thermal core surrounded by a foot of volcanic pumice insulation. The pumice enables the fire to burn with high efficiency, maintaining a core temperature of 700°F while the outside of the oven is just warm to the touch.

Throughout FireWorks Restaurant are examples of "Cob", an earthen building technique consisting of an adobe mixture of clay, sand and straw. Cob is hand formed, offering an unlimited sculptural potential, as seen in bas relief designs by local artist Kiko Denzer.

Recycled, Natural & Non-Toxic Materials

The rennovation of FireWorks Restaurant incorporated as many recycled building materials as possible, from the brick path in the courtyard to fir flooring from the ReBuilding Center which was once part of a school gym in Portland. "Forbo" natural linoleum was used for beautiful flooring in our bar, hallways and kitchen. The White Oak trim on the bar and fir floor were both finished with "Osmo" natural wax from Your Green Home.

Permaculture Landscaping

The original landscaping for FireWorks was completed by Rick Valley of Northern Groves, applying permaculture principals in selecting bamboos, native and heirloom grasses, flowers, annuals and perennials. Rick chose drought resistant varieties to limit midsummer watering.

Sustainable Investment Opportunities

Are you interested in investing your financial resources in the local community, supporting sustainable business practices? FireWorks Restaurant currently seeks individual investment partnerships to support additional green projects:

  • Solar water heat system to reduce the use of fossil fuels by our high temp dishwasher booster
  • Construction of an efficient portable wood fired oven for festivals and offsite catering
  • Purchase of a small, fuel-efficient van for offsite catering
  • Purchase and installation of a Point of Sale cash management system to increase operational efficiency and inventory maintenance
  • Construction of a stage off the main dining room to further expand musical performances

As a local family-owned business, FireWorks has secured working capital from private sources within our community over our 6 years of operation.  Microloans have been utilized with competetive rates of interest paid quarterly.
